Art Nouveau Enamel Sterling Pin

The Art Nouveau period spanned a short period from roughly 1895 to roughly 1910, some say 1914. The term actually means "new art" in French and in this case it is descriptive of what took place in the decorative arts world during this time frame. Some might even call the movement
reformist as the artists wanted the "art" back in their creations. The character of art changed. It was now more naturalistic and flowing. Think curvy whiplash, botanicals and long haired maidens gracing textiles, furniture, paintings, sculpture and of course, jewelry!

There were many schools as the style was international in reach. In Germany it was Jugendstil for example and in Poland this movement was called Young Poland style or Mloda Polska. The
yearn for a change in the direction art was heading and natural themes were probably the binding ties.

Pins like the one shown below were popular during the Art Nouveau period and as you can see the ancient technique of enameling is employed. This pin is sterling silver with an exquisite floral
motif. This pin uses both cloisonné and basse-taille which gives the design depth. The leaves seem to pop right of the pin. I can think of no better way to display your artistic talents. The
technique requires precision and an eye for design. See the book Answers to Questions about Old Jewelry by C. Jeanenne Bell for more about enameling and to see example of pins like this.
