Antique Victorian Rose Cut Bohemian Garnet Bar Pin

The Victorians loved their garnets not only for the curative and protective
powers they are said to posses, but for the fire of the stones themselves.
Although they were at the height of their popularity during the Victorian era,
they were used by the Egyptians as an offering to the gods when someone died.

Bohemian garnets are pyrope garnets found in you guessed it, Bohemia, now Czechoslovakia. They come in many varieties, [they are one of the largest families of gemstones] but
there are actually six common types of garnets in all variety of colors. Some
are even known to change colors. They have a glass like luster and are
pretty hard on the Mohs scale. As a matter of fact garnet sand is/was used as an abrasive.
Bohemian garnets are known for their deep red color.

Jewelry made from Bohemian garnets usually have the garnets set very close together so that you can barely see the metal/setting. This bar pin shows this construction. The metal is brass and it
dates to the Victorian era.
