Calvaire - Sterling Enamel and Rhinestone Pansy Clip
Here is a piece of vintage jewelry from a name that you will not run across very often. Calvaire! Try doing a search on eBay and you will see that this jewelry really is rare. We have only seen a handful at auctions and we have never run across a piece at a show. If you have the book Inside the Jewelry Box, Vol. 1 by Ann Pitman, she has a clip like this one with an amethyst stone at the center. She says the condition is "fair" and it still commands a high price. She also states that she rarely sees this name at auction and she has been searching for about ten years! Yup! We think that is rare.
In the book, Collecting Costume Jewelry 101 by Julia Carroll, Ms. Carroll states that it is probably worth buying a piece even if it is slightly damaged. We have heard that before. We have also heard
that if you let it pass you by, you may never see it again.
Calvaire vintage jewelry is considered to be the best of the best. All of the research we have done indicates that the company began sometime in the 1920s and ceased operations during the 1960s. We could not find out a lot more. We also know that the company must have made accessories as its name has been found on purses [see the Ann Pitman book for more].
This pansy clip has some issues. The black enamel is worn in a few spots and the gold vermeil also shows some wear. The amber colored stone at the center is still brilliant. Note the type of
prongs used. This piece is also hefty. When you hold it you know it is a quality piece of vintage costume jewelry.
