Ralph DeRosa Sterling Art Deco Style Fur Clip
Sometimes all you need to do is look at a piece and you know it is well made. Ralph DeRosa vintage costume jewelry certainly fits the bill. This is a 1940s fur clip in sterling with a gold vermeil finish. It is thought that like many costume jewelry designers DeRosa used sterling during the WWII period due to the shortage of other metals. We always get a kick out of this fact. Sterling is more valuable than base metal after all and it was a last resort to so many during this period. It is also refreshing to think of the sacrifice citizens of this great country were willing to make during a time of war. Contrasted with today's selfishness and divisions it really is something quite special indeed. It is also a testament to the ingenuity and naturally the desire to stay in business and make
money of the costume jewelry designers of the day.
This clip has an art deco look. It is a geometric tiered design with a large emerald cut green unfoiled glass stone on top. Small clears decorate the edges of the second and bottom tiers. It is a hefty piece and a fabulous example of his work. This piece has exquisite proportions and has very little if any damage considering how old it is. Many of the old vermeil pieces loose their finish over the
years. This is expected and not considered by most to be a flaw unless the piece is somehow unsightly. The vermeil on this vintage clip is in near pristine condition.
While many will not wear fur these days as it is not politically correct, you can wear this on a coat, winter poncho, scarf or even on your dress, pocket or jeans. I have seen beautiful dress and fur clips put on velvet ribbons and used as a choker. This is a stunning look and so unique. No one else will have a necklace like it! You can also wear these at the collar of a crisp white shirt. Think of how that would look with slacks or a nice pair of designer jeans! I have seen them on shirt cuffs,
handbags, belts, and as hair ornaments. If you check out old movies or have seen pictures of movie stars of the era, they wore clips on several parts of their garments, most already mentioned. We think it is a great way to change an outfit and make it your own! As you can see there are many uses for these old fur clips. We know of a few collectors that only display them. The very fact
that furs are no longer something most women will wear makes these pieces even
more collectable. Will they ever be made again? If they are you would have to
wonder if they would be of such quality and impeccable craftsmanship.
