More from The Brimfield Fair by Amazing Adornments

Amazing Adornments

More from the Brimfield Fair

We had such a great time at this historic fair, that we wanted to share more images of all the fun!
Although our interest is mostly in vintage collectables, mostly costume jewelry, handbags, cufflinks and vanity accessories, we couldn't resist checking out some of these vendors.

Yup! All of these pictures have something in common. Sculpture! Sculpture is art as is some costume jewelry, but that is not why we visited these vendors. We also like to garden and we were
looking for a piece of garden art! We found a super Buddha head that looks right at home under our Solomon Seals. It is similar to the gold faced Buddha below, except ours is more weathered which fits right in with our naturalistic looking shade garden.

I told you, you can find almost anything at this fair!

Amazing Adornments FOW Art Nouveau Sterling Enamel Pin

Amazing Adornments Find of the Week

Art Nouveau Enamel Sterling Pin

The Art Nouveau period spanned a short period from roughly 1895 to roughly 1910, some say 1914. The term actually means "new art" in French and in this case it is descriptive of what took place in the decorative arts world during this time frame. Some might even call the movement
reformist as the artists wanted the "art" back in their creations. The character of art changed. It was now more naturalistic and flowing. Think curvy whiplash, botanicals and long haired maidens gracing textiles, furniture, paintings, sculpture and of course, jewelry!

There were many schools as the style was international in reach. In Germany it was Jugendstil for example and in Poland this movement was called Young Poland style or Mloda Polska. The
yearn for a change in the direction art was heading and natural themes were probably the binding ties.

Pins like the one shown below were popular during the Art Nouveau period and as you can see the ancient technique of enameling is employed. This pin is sterling silver with an exquisite floral
motif. This pin uses both cloisonné and basse-taille which gives the design depth. The leaves seem to pop right of the pin. I can think of no better way to display your artistic talents. The
technique requires precision and an eye for design. See the book Answers to Questions about Old Jewelry by C. Jeanenne Bell for more about enameling and to see example of pins like this.

Amazing Adornments Antiquing in Brimfield, MA

Amazing Adornments at the Brimfield Antiques Fair

The July Brimfield Fair was last week beginning on Tuesday the 11th and it ran through Sunday. This fair is one of the largest in the this area. Dealers come from all over the country to display and sell
their pieces. This fabulous event takes place three times a year. The venue is about a mile along Route 20. Both sides of the street have open fields packed with vendors. The offerings range from trays of vintage and contemporary costume jewelry to antique furniture and fixtures for your garden.

You would think that a fair with so many days would not have a huge amount of dealer or buyer participation on the first day. Especially a day the was destined to have a high temperature of over
90 degrees with high humidity. Well, think again!

We arrived early and we were far from the first! Fields were already bustling with dealers and buyers alike. We parked at a field called Crystal Brook and started our hunt there. We visited almost
every field that was open on our side of the street and several on the other side. We decided that our next visit in September we will start at the Collins Apple Barn as we found several bargains there.

As you can see from the images below all kinds of characters run the booths and visit the fields. Young, old, black, white and everything in between can be found wondering around. Although, I was
mostly interested in the vintage jewelry, I did get a kick out of some of the vintage people I spotted.

Amazing Adornments FOW July 15, 2007 SCHREINER Figural

Amazing Adornments Find of the Week

Schreiner does Figurals

When you speak of high quality vintage costume jewelry, how many brands are you envisioning? Surely the maker of this fine swan pin is one of them. Henry Schreiner costume jewelry is not only a favorite of collectors, it has certain characteristics that make it somewhat easy to distinguish. There are many unsigned pieces on the market so knowing these characteristics help. By no means can one say, for instance, that a piece with an inverted rhinestone is Schreiner, but at least you will have a
starting place for your search.

Okay, since I mentioned inverted stones...Schreiner costume jewelry can sometimes be haracterized by the way or direction the rhinestones are placed in their settings. If you look at the image below, you can see that some of the stones have been set with the pointed side up. This was done so that the rhinestone would catch more light. Schreiner also used a construction method called hook and eye. This technique is visible on the reverse of some pieces. An unusual choice of stones was
another characteristic of Henry Schreiner jewelry. Not only were the choices daring, the way they were combined was revolutionary at the time. Who can deny that when you come across a figural such as this!

Amazing Adornments Jewel for July ~ Miriam Haskell Mesh Bracelet

Amazing Adornments Jewel of the Month

Miriam Haskell Faux Pearl Mesh Bracelet

Most everyone loves Miriam Haskell costume jewelry. It is hard not to. Some of the most elaborate yet feminine costume jewelry I have ever seen was created at Haskell. Through the years the style of jewelry changed along with the current trends and designers came and went. One
thing always remains the same, unique, quality pieces!

This Russian gold- plated mesh bracelet is elegant and statement making at the same time. The mesh is heavy, not flimsy and it is naturally very rich in color. The clasp has the prettiest woven beaded work forming a frame of sorts around a large Niki baroque faux pearl button that
is just about hidden by the gilt metal flower. All of the small faux pearls are wired to the backing. Three clear rhinestones are used as accents. A box clasp is hidden underneath.
