Jeray Retro 1940s Sterling and Rhinestone Parure

Amazing Adornments New Finds

Jeray 1940s Retro Sterling and Rhinestone Parure

Costume jewelry sellers often use the word "rare". Sometimes the piece really is rare often it is not. If you shop for vintage jewelry on eBay you must have noticed that so many of the pieces are
labeled as rare. The word rare sometimes catches eyes so it is overused.

So what makes a piece of vintage costume jewelry rare anyway? Well, if it was mass produced, we don't think it is rare as mass production implies that many were made. Sometimes even a mass-
produced vintage piece can be rare, because not many survived for what ever reason. We always ask ourselves if we have seen the piece before and how long the company was in business.

Our find of the week is certainly rare. Rice- Weiner although being in business for a long time [founded in 1911 as New England Glassworks and changed name to Rice- Weiner in in 1938] did not
produce sterling jewelry for a long period of time. As with most jewelers in the 1940s, when WWII broke out, the use of most metals was prohibited. They turned to sterling silver instead.

You might have noticed that the title of this article says "Jeray" and we have been going on and on about Rice- Weiner. In 1946 Rice- Weiner split up into two companies, one went on to mark their jewelry Barclay, while the other company marked their costume jewelry Jeray and American Beauty Pearls. Pieces with the Jeray mark are far and few between [just Google the name to find out].

This set consists of a fur clip and divalicious bracelet and clip- on earrings. It dates to between 1946 and 1948 due to the use of sterling. as you can see it is a beauty with very strong retro lines. The huge emerald cut topaz colored rhinestones rival the real thing. The small, but dazzling clear rhinestones look like real diamonds. We have seen the earrings alone and a brooch that looked like the fur clip, however we have never seen all three together. For us this is rare!

If this set reminds you of a McClelland Barclay, you have an excellent eye. Rice- Weiner produced jewelry for him as well!
