Matisse "Leaf" Enamel and Copper Demi Parure

Copper jewelry has an enduring quality. It may fall out of favor with the masses as it did on the early 60s due to fashion trends, however aficionados never grow weary of it.

During the 1940s while Rebajes was creating his copper masterpieces on the East coast, another
company was doing the same on the West coast. This company was "Renoir of Hollywood" as it was known in 1946. The name of the company changed to Renoir of California, Incorporated after a fire destroyed the companies small initial operation. The Matisse line was introduced in 1952. While jewelry that was strictly made from copper was called Renoir, the Matisse jewelry was enamel on copper.

You have to try an imagine what California must have been like during these years. It was the end days of the "Golden Era" heyday of the movie studio where the studios made the stars. Pinups
and sexy screen sirens dressed to the nines still abound and the so called "California Life Style" was germinating. In the book Copper Art Jewelry by Burkholz and Kaplan it is said that Jerry Fels got much of his inspiration from his surroundings. While some of the jewelry had a more modernist flavor,
the company produced jewelry in a variety of styles.

This vibrant brooch and earring set is naturalistic. Many of the companies designs were of leaves and flowers. This maple leaf set was produced in many colors and without the raised copper
balls and is a favorite amongst collectors.

Because of the additional work it took to produce the Matisse pieces, they usually command a higher price than the all copper Renoir pieces. All and all it is easy to see why a powerhouse like
Coro tried to buy the company!
