German Matte Cloisonné Enamel|Amazing Adornments Finds of the Week

Amazing Adornments Find of the Week

German Enamel Jewelry

We were lucky enough to find three fabulous pieces of German Modernist
enamel
Jewelry. The bracelet is unsigned. Two are signed with an "S" in a
circle once thought to be the hallmark of Karl Schibensky. It is now known that this hallmark actually belongs to
Scholtz and Lammel, according to Ginger Moro author of European Designer Jewelry. Here is a current article regarding German and French Enamel Jewelry also written by Ms. Moro. Check it out for additional information.

Modernist enamel German jewelry was at its hey day during the 1930s into the 1960s. The lines followed much of the other German jewelry designs of the time. Remember that the Germans' were influenced by the Bauhaus movement. This movement wanted to return art to the artist and their method of achieving this goal was to rely on more naturalistic materials and motifs. In other words, tone it down!

The Germans preferred to use a matte finished cloisonné enamel technique as opposed to the shiny finish preferred by say the French. Both techniques produce wonderful results.

There are many other types of enameling techniques including Basse-taille and Plique-à-jour to name a couple.

The cufflinks are in three shades of blue with with the golden wire separating the colors and forming a frame. The bracelet is splendid and also ncorporates geometric design as does the brooch. All are counter enameled on the reverse.
