Rediscovering Mid - Century [1950s and
1960s] Plastic Jewelry
Costume jewelry had been made out of plastic for decades prior to the 1950s. In the 1920s and 1930s Galalith, a milk based plastic, was used to create some very dramatic Art Deco costume jewelry. Bakelite, another early plastic, was used as was celluloid. Some of the prettiest costume
jewelry was created out of plastic during the 1950s and the 1960s. Many of these pieces were made out of thermoplastic or Lucite. Most collectors know about the Lisner Oak Leaf pieces, but there are equally attractive pieces out there waiting for us to discover and admire, not to mention wear. Here are a few of our favorites.
