Amazing Adornments
Find of the Week

Korda

The Thief of Bagdad pieces are amongst some of my favorites. Not only are they celebrated pieces of costume jewelry from a more glamorous time, there is just so much intrigue behind their creation. Part of what I find myself doing on a daily basis while doing research is sifting through all of the "data" available in abundance in this wonderful and wacky internet driven part of the big world I
find myself lucky to be a part of, trying to figure out what is true, let alone accurate and what I can take to be factual information. No complaints. Just the truth!

I know for certain that there was a line of costume jewelry manufactured during the 1940s by Rice- Wiener. Yes, the Rice- Wiener that also manufactured costume jewelry for Barclay, and McClelland Barclay. This is documented in both American Costume Jewelry and A Tribute to America by the Carla and Roberto Brunialti. I am also certain that these pieces were inspired by the movie "The Thief of Bagdad" directed by Alexander Korda.

I am not sure that they were worn in the movie. As a matter of fact, I think not! I also do not know if the often heard story about these pieces being made for the cast of the movie is true. I tend to think not. I do believe that they were meant as promotion for the movie. Jewelry with the
mark Korda was not limited to the Thief of Bagdad pieces. All of the pieces are considered
rare.
