Coro "Ubangi" Blackamoor

Tribal Lady Enamel Brooch

This vintage pin was given four stars in the book A Tribute to America by Carla and Roberto Brunialti. It is called "Ubangi" and it is a very good representation of a lady from the African Ubangi tribe. Note the rings around the neck. The ladies in this tribe use a ring to stretch their necks, adding one per year. They did this as a sign of beauty. This may seem off-putting, but think of some of the things that we do in the name of beautification! Lips were also stretched with disks, supposedly for protection from other tribes, as were the ears.

This gorgeous vintage enamel pin was issued patent 131,768 in 1942. The patent was issued to Adolph Katz for Coro. Is is a substantial brooch in gold- tone metal and bright enamel including the traditional red, black, green and yellow headdress.
