Amazing Adornments will Miss Antiques on Cambridge Street

Antiques on Cambridge Street ~ Gone but not Forgotten

One of my favorite places to find vintage jewelry was Antiques on Cambridge Street that was located on yes, Cambridge Street in Cambridge Massachusetts. Well, I will no longer be able to spend long afternoons going through the many cases of vintage jewelry because like so many other brick and mortar shops, they have closed. This antique shop was often sited as one of the best in the Boston area, most recently in 2005 for furniture, by Boston magazine. There are several other antique shops and most do have vintage costume jewelry but, I for one will miss this fabulous venue.

It might not look like much from the outside, however when you walked inside is could be a treasure trove of furniture, art work, vintage hats purses, vanity items and of lots of vintage jewelry. Trifari, Coro, Hobe, Miriam Haskell are just a few designers I purchased there. They also had many unsigned pieces of good to better quality. I found several DeLizza and Elster sets during my many visits. The first time I went inside I was overcome by jewelry overload, kind of like when you go to the supermarket and for lets say a can of soup and the shelves have so many brands, you stop seeing any of them!

Most of the cases were extremely well kept making for easier browsing. Some were not so easy to shop. The floor attendant had to pick the pieces so the cases with too much jewelry made it difficult to see anything and difficult for the attendant to pick.

This latest closing got me to wondering whether the proliferation of web shops selling vintage jewelry was a good or bad thing. Antiques on Cambridge Street sold furniture as I mentioned as well as vintage accessories and there is no shortage of on-line auctions doing the same. There are other antique shops in the Boston area, but more and more are closing all over the country. Somehow I think we will miss the opportunity to hold and really inspect the jewelry before purchasing
it. Welcome to the age of on-line shopping which I have nothing against as I do sell my finds this way!

I also wonder where all the sellers have put their jewelry up for sale? Umm...
