Rice- Weiner for Alexander Korda ~
Blackamoor "Jungle Book" Figural Drummer Pin

Here is another great piece of costume jewelry produced by Rice- Weiner. This figural is from the Alexander Korda movie "The Jungle Book" and it is signed Alexander Korda. According to the Book A Tribute to America by Carla and Roberto Brunialti it dates to 1942.

Not only is a piece like this scarce, we do not believe anything like it will ever be made again. After all, Blackamoors are not politically correct! The term it self is now considered offensive [rightly so] when describing an individual with dark skin or a person of African [especially northern Africa] ancestry. None the less, this piece was produced some time ago as mentioned above and they are extremely collectable. Just about every major costume jeweler of this period made one or more.
Nowadays, the terms Black Americana or African American memorabilia are often used at antique shows and the like. We do not believe that using these terms makes the items any less offensive. We do believe that the items have historical relevance. It is difficult to deal with pieces like these or any ethnic jewelry for that matter.

There are those that do not like the fact that items such as this are on the market. We can see why! Most of this type of work presents a stereotype that many would prefer not to have in their
faces. Some collectors will tell you that they purchase these items to remind them of their heritage. Our intent is not a history lesson of a lesson in current race relations. Again, we value these pieces for their artistic beauty and historic relevance only. We are not sure how to overlook so many
great pieces from some of the best designers in the business.

If you recall from recent posts or from your own experience in this field, Rice- Weiner produced/stocked jewelry for McClelland Barclay among others. Alexander Korda commissioned the
company to produce jewelry for "The Jungle Book" and for "Thief of Bagdad". This drummer brooch is well made of gold- tone metal and enamel. The drum is attached to the drummer via rivets.

IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT SOMEONE WOULD GO TO ALL THE TROUBLE OF PUTTING TOGETER A WEBSITE OF SUCH GREAT CLASSIC VINTAGE JEWELERY ONLY TO DISCREDIT IT BY ADDING IN
JUNK JEWELERY BY SUSI BJONTEGARD
,,,THEY CAN'T EVEN GIVE HER STUFF AWAY ON EBAY. IT IS DISRESPECTFUL
TO INCLUDED THAT LINE IN A SITE THAT CLAIMS TO BE LISTING TRUE DESIGNERS!SHE IS A JOKE IN THE UK!!!

What I find really unfortunate are the jewelry SNOBS of this world. No one at our web site ever thought that we would only sell HIGH END jewelry. We also sell JJ, Sarah Coventry, Avon, Napier, Monet and other signed jewelry that some would say is junk or as you put it "You can't give it away on Ebay! Guess what? It still sells!! Have you seen the book Inside the Jewelry Box? Suzanne's jewerly gets more than a mention. I am glad that you consider yourself an expert on what we should or should not sell! We sell ALL costume jewelry not just HIGH END!! And we don't like SNOBS!!!
