The amazing vintage copper bracelet shown here is signed Renoir in script. This hallmark places the manufacturer of this bracelet at 1946. This is the earliest know hallmark from this jewelry company. This vintage bracelet is a great example of this companies stylized design work.
Renoir was founded in Los Angeles, CA in 1946 by Jerry Fells. The company was called Renoir of California. The jewelry created here was inspired by the early 20th century Arts and Crafts movement copper designs.
In 1952, Fells opened another company, Matisse LTD. Here the designs were copper with colorful enameling.
Most of the jewelry was signed Renoir, although some was marked Matisse Renoir and Matisse in Script. The latter signature was used from 1952 until 1964. I have a piece marked Renoir only not in script.
Both companies closed on 1964.
The cuff bracelets and the fringed necklaces command the highest prices in the vintage collectable market.
