Which Contemporary Costume Jewelry
Designers Should We Collect Now?

This question comes up often, both on jewelry forums I am a member of and in my own mind. With so many choices the decision is not any easy one. You never know for certain if you are looking at a flash in the pan or the next Kenneth Lane or Joan Rivers.

The first thing I usually take into account is how well made is the piece. If I am purchasing the piece in person I feel its weight and look carefully at the components and construction. Purchasing over the internet is another story. Outside of the obvious, look carefully at the images and read the text, each of us needs to utilize our own "picking" techniques, There is a lot of costume jewelry on the market signed by contemporary artists. Some better than others as you would expect. I could be wrong, however something tells me think that poorly designed or constructed jewelry will never become collectable. Will it even last long enough to be considered vintage?

As a dealer it is likely that you have jewelry from years of purchases sitting around that you want to move or you could be relatively new to the business and you need to know how best to spend
your dollars.

Spotting the Trend

  • Fashion Shows because of the designers forward thinking business model are a natural for getting the first inkling of what might be the next "MUST HAVE". Ask yourself, who
designed the jewelry or accessories that the models are wearing or carrying and find the answer.

  • Read: Magazines and better store catalogues are invaluable because they show which items that started at that fashion show made it at least to the display cases/shelves.

  • Watch People in the Public Eye: Celbutants, fashionistas, movie, TV [news anchors included] stars, high powered executives, athletes, Models [when off the job] and music stars. I am aware that many are paid to wear certain product, but for the most part they all actually went out and purchased the item that made it to the shelves.
